Natural methods, honest results
Helen works exclusively with natural, wax-free techniques — because healthy dreadlocks start with a clean foundation. Depending on your hair type and the look you're after, she uses a combination of:
Backcombing — a classic starting point for creating new dreadlocks.
Hair is sectioned and backcombed to create a matted base, forming natural locks that tighten over time. Great for most hair types.
Crochet method — a precise technique using a fine crochet hook to tighten, neaten, and lock hair. Used both for creating new dreadlocks and for maintenance. Gives a tidier, faster result and can be used on all hair types.
Twist & rip — a gentler method suited to naturally coarse or curly hair, working with the hair's natural tendency to lock. Creates a more organic, textured look.
Helen will always choose and explain the best method for your hair during your consultation or at the start of your appointment.
How to wash your dreadlocks
Is there anything I can do to help my dreadlocks mature well?
Yes — palm rolling! Helen can show you how.
How often should I wash my dreadlocks?
For most people, washing once a fornight is ideal — enough to keep the scalp clean and healthy without over-drying the hair or slowing the locking process. In the early stages (the first 4–6 weeks), you may want to wait a little longer between washes to allow your locks to form. Helen will advise based on your hair type and method.
Can I use a regular shampoo on my dreadlocks?
Avoid regular shampoos — most contain conditioners, silicones, and residue-leaving ingredients that build up inside the lock and prevent proper matting. Use a residue-free shampoo or a specialist dreadlock shampoo. Helen can recommend products that work well with her methods.
When can I wash my dreadlocks for the first time?
If you've had dreadlocks created using the crochet or backcombing method, we recommend waiting at least 2–4 weeks before your first wash. This gives the locks time to set and tighten. If Helen uses a different method for your hair, she'll give you a specific timeline at your appointment.
What's the best way to dry my dreadlocks after washing?
Thorough drying is essential. Damp locks that stay wet for too long can develop mould inside — which is as unpleasant as it sounds. After washing, gently squeeze out excess water, then use a microfibre towel and allow your locks to air dry fully. A hairdryer on a medium heat can speed things up. Make sure they're completely dry before tying them up or going to sleep.
How do I prevent my dreadlocks from loosening when washing?
Apply shampoo gently and avoid vigorous scrubbing — this causes frizz and loosens sections, especially in younger locks. Use a squeeze-and press motion rather than rubbing. If your locks are newer, consider using a stocking or mesh cap over them while you wash to reduce movement.
How often will my dreadlocks require maintenance?
Most people find that a maintenance session every 8–12 weeks keeps locks looking tidy without over-working the hair. That said, it depends on your hair growth rate, lifestyle, and how neat you like your locks to look. Helen will recommend a maintenance schedule that suits your individual locks at your appointment.
